Osasuna falls to Napoli, 2-1, in fourth preseason friendly

Club Atlético Osasuna suffered its first preseason defeat, falling 2-1 to Napoli at Stadio Teofilo Patini on Wednesday afternoon. The Italian side took the lead with goals from midfielder Matteo Politano and forward Lorenzo Lucca. Los Rojillos cut the deficit when forward Ante Budimir converted a penalty kick but could not find the equalizer.

Osasuna controlled the early stages but failed to threaten goalkeeper Alex Meret. Napoli did not test Osasuna goalkeeper Aitor Fernández until past the half-hour mark, when Politano volleyed home the opening goal. Just before halftime, Napoli won a free kick, and Politano’s effort struck the crossbar.

After halftime, Napoli made several substitutions, including bringing on Lucca, who doubled the lead with a powerful shot from the edge of the area. Trailing by two, head coach Luis Miguel Ramis’ squad pressed forward. Their efforts paid off when Budimir collected a pass from midfielder Asier Osambela and was fouled in the box. The Croatian international converted the penalty for Osasuna’s only goal.

Osasuna now turns its attention to its final preseason friendly, facing Al Ain FC of the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, Aug. 8, at El Sadar. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. CET (7 p.m. BST, 2 p.m. ET).
